The Princess of Wales is all smiles as she joined her family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after taking part in the Trooping the Colour procession, her first public appearance since being diagnosed with cancer.

Waving and smiling to the crowds gathered, she was seen departing Buckingham Palace in a glass carriage alongside her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

During the ceremony, she viewed from a window with her children, before returning to the palace to view the RAF fly-past alongside King Charles. In a sweet moment, she can be seen grinning down at her youngest son, while pointing upwards at the aircraft flying over central London.

In a moving statement on Friday, Kate, 42, revealed that she has both good and bad days as she undergoes “preventative chemotherapy” for an undisclosed form of the disease.

Admitting that she is “not out of the woods yet”, the Princess said she has returned to light duties and helping her three children with their schoolwork when she feels well enough.

The Princess said she was looking forward to King Charles’s official birthday parade, which will be her first time appearing with the Royal Family since Christmas Day.

He added: “I mean, it shows that she’s very, very dedicated to the country, and then to the monarch and then to the other royals, you know.

After spending much of the year coming to terms with the diagnosis and receiving ongoing chemotherapy, the future queen looked relaxed as she travelled along one of London’s most famous thoroughfares with her family in the glass state coach.

Her appearance was in doubt after she missed the final Trooping rehearsal last weekend, but with the King also suffering from cancer the spectacle of military pomp and pageantry became a symbolic statement by the monarchy after a period of uncertainty.

She was surrounded by other members of the family, with her husband the Prince of Wales, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, on horseback, as were the Princess Royal, Colonel Blues and Royals, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Colonel Scots Guards.

What is Trooping the Colour?

12:12 , Holly Evans

Charles is Colonel in Chief of the regiments of the Household Division which include the Life Guards, Blues and Royals and all five regiments of Foot Guards – the Welsh, Scots, Irish, Coldstream and Grenadier – on parade for the official birthday, alongside the mounted Band of the Household Cavalry and the massed Foot Guards bands.

The military spectacle, also known as the Birthday Parade is a gift from the Household Division, and Charles first attended in 1951, aged three, riding in a carriage with his grandmother, the Queen Mother, and aunt, Princess Margaret, and first rode as Colonel of the Welsh Guards in 1975.

Trooping the Colour is a social as well as a ceremonial occasion and the stands overlooking the parade ground were filled with about 8,000 spouses, girlfriends and parents of the guardsmen and officers on parade.

It featured more than 1,250 soldiers, and hundreds of Guardsmen were lined up on the parade ground waiting to be inspected by the King from his carriage with Camilla, Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, and joined by the mounted royal Colonels.

The colour, or regimental flag, that will be trooped will be the King’s Colour of number 9 company, Irish Guards.

Political artist says royal family are ‘an anchor for uncertain times’

10:21 , Holly Evans

Political artist Kaya Mar was among spectators gathered to watch the royal procession down The Mall.

The 67-year-old had brought two oil paintings, one of the King and another of the Princess of Wales, her husband and their children.

Mr Mar said: “The royal family are like an anchor for uncertain times – especially when you see the mess of politicians.”

He added: “They are the only steady political institution amid the turmoil in the United Kingdom and, really, what is the only steady institution for the future of this country?

“It’s still royalty. They’re harmless. They’re not politicians. Whether you’re right, left, middle, whatever it is, you look up to them.”

The artist said his painting of Kate, which invoked Biblical imagery comparing her to Mary, was intended to poke fun at the “religious fervour” he thought surrounded the birth of her most recent child, Prince Louis, in 2018.

Full statement from Kate ahead of Trooping the Colour

10:04 , Holly Evans

In a statement the Princess of Wales said: “I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months. It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.

“My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.

“I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet.

“I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal.

“Thank you so much for your continued understanding, and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me.”

No time frame yet for Kate’s full return to duties

09:51 , Holly Evans

Kate’s public appearance at Trooping will be her first official outing of 2024 after she missed engagements at the start of the year when she was admitted to hospital for abdominal surgery on January 16.

At the time her condition was thought to be non-cancerous but tests after the successful operation found the disease, and Kate disclosed the medical development in an emotional video released in March.

A time frame has not been set for Kate’s return to a full schedule of public engagements as she is being given time to convalesce and recover before full-time work.

Trooping the Colour: Everything we know about King’s birthday

08:30 , Holly Evans

Trooping the Colour is one of the most popular, glittering events in the royal calendar and it is taking place this Saturday (15 June).

Otherwise known as the King’s official birthday, it is a formal state ceremonial parade that sees the Monarch inspect the regiments of Household Division.

The eyes of the world will be on London this weekend because of the royal family’s ongoing health troubles, which saw King Charles take a step back from his duties earlier this year.

Everything We Know About Trooping the Colour this year

Who is Kate, the Princess of Wales?

08:24 , Holly Evans

Catherine Elizabeth Middleton was born to the Middletons at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading on January 9 1982.

She was christened at the parish church of St Andrew’s Bradfield in Berkshire on June 20 the same year.

Amman in Jordan was home to Kate and her family for a few years in the mid-1980s, where she attended a nursery school from the age of three, before the family returned to Berkshire.

At 13, she went to the exclusive private Marlborough College in Wiltshire, where she part-boarded.

She graduated in 2005 with a 2:1 in history of art from St Andrews University, where she met and began dating William, whom she married at Westminster Abbey in 2011.

She was dubbed “Waity Katie” by the press for her patience during their long courtship, and was described by William in their engagement interview as having “a really naughty sense of humour”.

A keen photographer, the princess usually takes the publicly released photos of her children to mark their birthdays.

Cancer will have brought her family closer to the Princess

07:30 , Holly Evans

Family is the focus for the Princess of Wales in both her private and public life and her cancer diagnosis will have brought those closest rallying round.

The Princess of Wales has apologised ahead of this year’s Trooping the Colour for missing a major rehearsal.

Kate, the honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards, wrote to express her sadness at missing the Colonel’s Review, which typically takes place a week before the parade.

“I wanted to write and let you know how proud I am of the entire regiment ahead of the Colonel’s Review and Trooping of the Colour,” she wrote.

“I appreciate everyone trooping this year has been practising for months and dedicating many hours to ensuring their uniforms and drill are immaculate.

“Being your colonel remains a great honour, and I am very sorry that I’m unable to take the salute at this year’s Colonel’s Review. Please pass my apologies to the whole Regiment, however, I do hope that I am able to represent you all once again very soon. Please send my very best wishes and good luck to all involved.”

Simon Le Bon ‘beyond thrilled and surprised’ to become an MBE

Simon Le Bon has said he is “beyond thrilled and surprised” to have been made an MBE.

The Duran Duran singer, 65, was honoured in King Charles’s birthday honours list for his services to both music and charity.

“What an incredible, and totally unexpected honour!” he said of becoming a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

“I am truly beyond thrilled and surprised.

“These last few years have been some of the most important in Duran Duran’s career, and this is a bright but humbling highlight as our journey continues.

“It is fitting that the honour has been awarded not just for my role in music, but also for the work I’ve been fortunate to be involved with outside the band for some of the causes I believe in.

“To name but two of them, I hope this moment helps to raise awareness for the Blue Marine Foundation and the importance of their conservation work, and for Centrepoint.

“Their mission for over 50 years to put an end to homelessness in the UK is vital.”

The Princess of Wales announces her return

Friday 14 June 2024 18:05 , Emma Guinness

The Princess of Wales has released a statement confirming her attendance at Trooping the Colour tomorrow and providing an update on her cancer treatment.

It reads: “I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months.

Royal source claims Kate doesn’t want to ‘upstage’ King at Trooping the Colour

Friday 14 June 2024 17:00 , Emma Guinness

Following the news that the Princess of Wales is “considering” an appearance at Trooping the Colour, a source close to Kate has claimed she won’t appear to avoid upstaging the king.

Should the Princess appear, it will be her first time in the public eye since Christmas last year. She stepped back from her role in January because of ongoing health concerns.

The source told the Daily Beast: “Kate’s appearance will steal King Charles’s show. She won’t take [the] risk to anger her father-in-law.

“It would be wonderful, of course,” they added, “but more than slightly bizarre given that she bowed out of the Colonel’s Review.”

The cost of Trooping the Colour

Friday 14 June 2024 15:30 , Emma Guinness

A freedom of information request (FOI) has given an insight into the potential cost of this year’s Trooping the Colour.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) revealed that they spent £59,662.70 on the 2021 event on transport, fuel, horse food and temporary accommodations.

However, the total was much higher as this is not every cost incurred by the parade, which marks the King’s official birthday.

A much more significant £28 million was set aside to cover the event and the then-Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, which included four days of public events. An additional eight million was spent on security for the event by the Metropolitan Police.

Statista reports that the Sovereign Grant for this financial year is £86.3 million – the same amount allocated in 2022 and 2023.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘relieved’ to miss Trooping the Colour

Friday 14 June 2024 14:30 , Emma Guinness

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly “relieved” to miss this year’s Trooping the Colour.

According to reports, the Duke and duch*ess of Sussex, who are no longer working royals, were not invited to the King’s official birthday parade.

This was also reportedly the case last year, despite it being Charles’s first Trooping the Colour as King.

Royal expert Tessa Dunlop told the Mirror of last year’s event: “Prince Harry is not coming to the King’s inaugural Trooping of the Colour, when for the first time since 1986 Britain’s monarch will be mounted taking the salute.

“Whether Harry was invited or not (probably not why would you invite someone who was not going to attend?) is a moot point. Harry is no longer a working royal.

“Trooping the Colour is a job for our working royals. The key word there is ‘job’. Saturday will see them dressed up and on parade, doing what they do best, providing the military, which depends on its hierarchical structures, with a symbolic figurehead.”

Of the family’s appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony, royal author Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight: “They’ve been up there several times now.

“They are always impeccably behaved, often entertaining, and they always seem to enjoy it. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if William decides to bring them.”

Friday 14 June 2024 07:00 , Maroosha Muzaffar

Trooping the Colour is one of the most popular, glittering events in the royal calendar and it is taking place this Saturday (15 June).

Otherwise known as the King’s official birthday, it is a formal state ceremonial parade that sees the Monarch inspect the regiments of Household Division.

The eyes of the world will be on London this weekend because of the royal family’s ongoing health troubles, which saw King Charles take a step back from his duties earlier this year.

While the Monarch has now returned to a “reduced” summer schedule, he is continuing his cancer treatment alongside the Princess of Wales, who has not yet returned to duty.

The Princess of Wales has, however, hinted that she could appear with her family on the Buckingham Palace balcony this Saturday and reportedly said she is “considering” it should she feel well enough.
