Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (2024)

Important:This article is only for Google Maps built into your car. Feature availability or functionality may depend on your car manufacturer or regionand data plan.

For easy and reliable navigation, use the Google Maps app in your car. Maps will guide you with real-time traffic information to find the best route to your destination.

Voice navigation updates you with traffic information, turn-by-turn instructions, which lanes to use and route updates if a better route becomes available.

Tip: This feature isn't available in all languages and countries/regions.

Start or stop navigation

You can search on Maps using voice commands or the car'scentrescreen:

  1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps appUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (1).
  2. You may find up to two suggested destinations. Tap on these to navigate to or search for your destination.
  3. Start or stop navigation:
    • Other routes will be shown as grey lines on the map. Tap the grey lines to change your route selection.
    • To start navigation, tap Start Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (2).
    • To stop navigation, tap Close Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (3).

Tip:Some cars have an activity toggle button on the steering wheel that can display Maps on your driver dashboard.

Customise your route

Add a stop along the route

  1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps appUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (4).
  2. Search for your destination or tap it on the map.
  3. At the bottom, tap ExploreUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (5)Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (6)Add stop Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (7).
  4. Find your stop in either of these ways:
    • Select a category. Then tap the location that you want to add to your route.
    • TapSearch by voiceUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (8). Use voice to search for your stop.
  5. ​Tap Add stopUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (9)Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (10)ConfirmUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (11). The chosen stop will be added as your next stop.

Search by category along the route

  1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps appUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (12).
  2. Search for your destination or tap it on the map.
  3. At the bottom, tap SearchUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (13).
  4. Select a category, like a restaurantUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (14) or grocery shop Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (15). You'll find a list of nearby places and the estimated travel time to get there.
  5. Tap the location that you want to add to your route.

Avoid tolls, highways or ferries

  1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps appUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (19).
  2. Search for your destination or tap it on the map.

Turn traffic layers on and off

  1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps appUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (25).

  3. TurnTrafficon and off.

More navigation features

Mute, unmute or hear traffic alerts only

  1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps appUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (27).
  2. At the bottom, tap SettingsUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (28)Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (29)Mute settings.
  3. Choose one of the following:
    • Mute Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (30): Mutes voice directions during navigation.
    • Sound Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (31): Unmutes voice directions during navigation.
    • Traffic alerts onlyUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (32): Hear alerts from traffic, roadworks and crashes.

Navigate to home or work

To navigate to your labelled home or work addresses:

  1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps appUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (33).
  2. Tap the search barUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (34)Personal.
  3. TapHomeorWork.

You can label or edit your home and work addresses directly from your car:

  1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps appUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (35).

Use the compass or recentre the map

  • To switch the map between pointing in the direction that you’re travelling and pointing North, tap Compass Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (40).
  • To recentre the map to your current location, tap Your locationUse navigation in Google Maps built into your car (41).

Find speed limits

Important:This feature is unavailable in some locations.

You may find speed limit information while using navigation in some areas.

Speed limits shown in Maps are for informational use only. Make sure that you confirm speed limits with the posted traffic signs.

Navigate offline

If you have a poor Internet connection, offline maps will be used to guide you to your destination.

Find battery on arrival and out of range alerts

When you search for a destination in an electric vehicle, Maps will show your estimated battery remaining on arrival Use navigation in Google Maps built into your car (42)to your destination. If you’ll need to charge your car to reach the destination, compatible charging stations may automatically be added for you.
